A recent college BBA graduate, Trina Thompson, is suing her college, New york’s Monroe College, for not finding her a job.

She alleges that the placement cell of her college did not work hard enough to fetch her a job . She seeks complete reimbursement of her four year long BBA course fees ($70,000) plus $2,000 to compensate for the stress of her 3 month Job search!

Read complete story on CNN’s site.

In this economy, if each unemployed graduate starts suing their college for not being helped to get a job, all the colleges will have to file for bankruptcy! Or even worse, we may have to listen to weird news of government bailing out a college!

Colleges do not and can not guarantee jobs for their students (with an exception of some desperate colleges in India trying to get admissions using 100% job guarantee as a marketing trick).

Colleges are there to help students acquire the ability to sell themselves to potential employers. Colleges abridge the gap between a high school adolescent and an adroit professional.

Colleges can offer Career guidance to facilitate the students to choose their profession, but job guarantee is certainly a luxury. Colleges are not businesses to offer any business terms such as guarantee or warranty, they serve a moral purpose that is greater than that of any other traditional business.

It is ridiculous for that student to assume that the college will fetch her a job. Instead unemployed grads should try posting their resume to job boards, try doing interviews through references, etc. And most importantly, they should not get distressed when they do not find jobs. They should remember that this is a tough time for everybody and it is NOT their fault. This article on What do I do when no jobs are to be found may help.
