Comments – First Interview Experience of a Fresh Graduate

This is a follow up post of the Original Post on First Interview Experience of a Fresh Graduate.

Before I comment on whether the student should have been selected or not, I thought I would share few of the best email responses/comments that I got for that Post. One thing common in all the below mentioned comments is that they favored the student’s selection.

I think this Student should have been selected owing to the following reasons:

  1. The student honestly acknowledges her shortcomings and frankly admits about things she does not know. This proves her Integrity.
  2. She shows willingness to work hard and to overcome her shortcomings to cope up with the company’s expectations. This shows her Persistence.
  3. It is not a big deal to learn Java,C++ or dotNET within a short span, if one has the right spirit. Her confidence to learn Java in a week shows Optimism.
  4. She says that she has no material expectations from the job but wants to be paid for her work. This shows that she knows the value of work and wants to carry forward the experience from the job. This shows that learning is more important to her than earning.
  5. At the end of the interview, when asked if she had any questions, she asked a sensible question rather than the usual “No Questions” reply. This shows her Interest in the job and her Confidence.

I would select this student as she has knowledge of C++. One can learn JAVA easily if one has knowledge of C++.

As it was mentioned that the company was looking for budding engineers sans computer knowledge. I would go for this girl as she has the most important attribute- confidence.

Furthermore, she boldly admitted that she did not know Java. Many people hesitate to admit when they do not know something.

I think the candidate would be selected. She is student of Electrical Engineering, so she may not be knowing Computer technologies such as Java, dot Net etc,. The company would know this fact while calling Electrical Engineers for a Computer Science Job.

However, she seems to have sound knowledge in the topics she is supposed to have been knowing, C and C++, which shows that she has required aptitude for that job.

Perhaps she shouldn’t have mentioned that she is going to work for just one year before going for her higher education though.
